Cooking for yourself? Choose a suitable haggis pack, plan one portion and check how to store anything you reserve before heating. A practical guide to a solo Scottish supper.
A haggis supper can work just as well for one person as for a full table. The useful starting point is to plan the amount you want to eat before heating anything. That gives you a satisfying meal and a clear decision about the rest of the pack.
This guide is about organising a single meal. For the cooking method itself, use the instructions on your exact product and our haggis cooking guide.
A smaller pack is often easier to manage than a catering roll or ceremonial haggis. Our Macsween Haggis 400g and Macsween Vegetarian Haggis 400g are useful starting points to compare. The vegetarian product is suitable for vegans; the accompaniments need their own ingredient checks.
A 400g pack divides into two 200g portions. That is a simple planning example, rather than a serving rule: your appetite, chosen sides and any other courses will affect the amount you want. Our portion guide explains the difference between lighter servings and a main course.
Before choosing a larger pack, decide when you would use it and whether its opening, storage and freezing instructions fit that plan. A larger purchase is only helpful when you can use it as directed.
For a straightforward supper, you need one portion of haggis, a potato or another filling side, and a vegetable. Neeps and tatties are the familiar choice, but you can keep the plate simple with a baked potato and whichever vegetables you already have.
If you are choosing ready-made sides, check their ingredients separately. A plant-based haggis does not make buttered mash or a cream sauce vegan. For more combinations, see our serving ideas.
Read the whole label first. If the product can be opened and portioned before heating, use clean equipment to take out only the amount you intend to eat. Put the reserved portion away promptly, following the pack's storage and after-opening directions.
Do not heat the whole pack with the intention of cooling the spare portion and heating it again. Ready-cooked haggis may carry a do-not-reheat instruction. Reserving a portion before your meal's heating stage is different from keeping a portion that has already been heated.
Follow the manufacturer's method for the portion you are preparing. Do not assume that half a pack needs half the stated cooking time. If the label only gives directions for the whole product, ask the supplier for guidance before adapting the method.
Keep the label with any reserved haggis and note when you opened it. Follow its use-by date and any shorter after-opening limit. Freeze only where the instructions allow, taking account of whether the product has already been frozen or defrosted.
When you are ready to shop, compare the Macsween range and choose the pack that fits your meals. Planning one plate first makes a solo haggis supper much easier to organise.
A 200g portion is a useful example for a main meal with sides: half a 400g pack. Adjust for your appetite and other courses. Decide how to store the unused portion before opening the pack.
Do not assume so. Use any portion-specific directions on the label, including stirring and standing time where instructed. If the pack only explains heating the whole product, ask for guidance before adapting it to a smaller serving.
Where portioning before heating is permitted, use clean utensils and put the reserved portion away promptly as the label directs. Keep its opening date and instructions, observe the use-by and after-opening limits, and freeze only if the product permits it.
Do not plan this for a product labelled “do not reheat”. Instead, choose a suitable smaller pack or reserve a portion before heating, where permitted. Follow the manufacturer’s directions for the amount you are preparing and for storing any unused portion.
Try a baked potato and vegetables, or small portions of neeps and tatties. Sauce is optional. Check ready-made side and sauce pack sizes before buying, and plan how you will use any remainder. Our serving guide has more combinations.
